Opened in 1942 as a USAAF bomber site, the airport became a passenger carrying airport in 1986. Stansted airport only has one Terminal and one runway accommodating 41 airlines. Plans have been put forward to expand this to 2 runways, but there is strong opposition against this and no outcome has been reached yet.

Long Haul Flights -  3 hours before departure time

European Flights- 2 hours before departure time

UK and Ireland  - 1 hour before departure time

Chartered Flight - 3 hours before departure time

Boarding

Flight Information monitors are scattered through out the terminal and will show the flight departures , destination and gate number. Keep and eye on these as boarding will usually commence about 45 minutes ahead of departure.

Self Service check in

Self service check is also available for a number of airlines and is a great alternative to traditional check in counters. Saving time at the airport with choices of using the kiosks situated in the terminal or online up to 24 hours before departure(Check with airline for exact time) then take bags to fast bag drop off point
